Most Vesperites believe the Black Light Mining Company must pay the Constabulary to turn a blind eye to their myriad illegal activities, though conflicts between the two organizations do still occur. It appears that constable officers are currently carrying out an investigation in the west end of the city, in the wake of the customs office’s destruction.

Evidently, the Constabulary cares little for the safety of average Vesperites, having callously ignored Oliver’s heartfelt plea to save his older brother.

A “church” managed by a young priestess named Sister Linia on the site of what was once known as Cairwick Orphanage. Linia, a priestess of the Black Rose, opens the building’s doors to the public each morning for services and breakfast. Despite the offer of free food, most Vesperites are hesitant to set foot in a church of the heretical goddess, and Rook keeps a close eye on any visitors who do appear. According to Linia, the Chapel of Second Chances is named after a similar church to the Black Rose that stood in Vesper Ridge hundreds of years ago.

A three-volume set of ancient, highly esoteric scriptures of the Church of the Black Rose. Two centuries ago, the man who would become The Old Man Upstairs hid them in an underground shrine. He was killed shortly thereafter, and the Hymns sat forgotten until our party returned them to the surface.

The scriptures are dense and are written to deliberately confound the reader’s understanding, so analyzing them is a slow and difficult process. However, their dusty old pages promise many rewards for the patient scholar, including myriad insights into the gospel of the Black Rose, magical secrets, and even divine blessings from Our Lady herself.

Open worship of Our Lady of the Black Rose is illegal in Alinor, but not in Vesper Ridge. Even so, her following is highly taboo and public sites of worship are exceedingly rare within the city.

After Poor Jimmy’s death, our party learned of traditional funerary rites of the Black Rose’s faith from Sister Linia. When a member of the community passes away, their loved ones come together to knit a “mourning blanket” of black yarn embellished with intricate silver or white patterns, each one with a symbolic meaning known to the Black Rose’s devout and representative of the person being commemorated. These blankets are placed on display for an amount of time no shorter than the time the deceased spent among the community in life, and are then given to the family (or descendants of the family) of the deceased.
According to the Hymns for the Blossoming, many of the Church of the Black Rose’s traditional prayers, hymns, textiles and holy emblems reveal deeper symbolic meaning through a complex system of arithmancy: sacred music notation and geometries through which Our Lady’s divinity can be represented in the physical world.

A hovering, spectral head upon a neck that stretches several feet in length, like an unnervingly fleshy snake. He wears a tattered hood that is just as translucent as the rest of him. The Old Man (or “Mister Upstairs”) is the ghost of a priest who built a humble church to Our Lady of the Black Rose two hundred years ago on what were, at the time, the outskirts of the small town of Vesper Ridge. He was murdered in cold blood by fanatical followers of the Keeper, and his restless soul has haunted the site of his church ever since. However, before his death he had the foresight to hide several sacred texts of the Black Rose in an isolated chamber within the Labyrinth, and he’s held out hope that someday they would be recovered by fellow adherents of the faith. Now, after many years, our party has found them: a three-volume series of scriptures titled Hymns for the Blossoming.
