In Chapter III of our story, Ophile noticed that many ancient tales of demons have a few common threads. Most notably, the demons tend to appear while their victims sleep, either in nightmares or physically in the victim’s proximity.

She’s rather stylish in appearance, with dark purple fabric and delicate gold embroidery around the perimeter of her canopy. Her ferrule and handle are both carved from shining ivory, and her whole body is light as a feather. When she speaks, the sound emanates loud and clear all around her, even though an umbrella certainly should not have any way of producing a voice. Her manner is graceful, refined, and a bit snobbish.

Dorothy seems deeply reluctant to be carried too deep into the Velvet Ward, claiming to have “a bit of a history” with some of its residents. After some persuading by Catalin, she promised to reveal her past to the party together with Sylvester.

In Vesperite society, which shuns and distrusts elves, this choice of heir was highly controversial, and there is still much gossip and speculation among the aristocracy as to the late Lord Hypatia’s motives for such a choice. One popular theory is that Calix was chosen because an elf’s centuries-long lifespan will afford him ample time to build a large family and ensure House Hypatia’s continued prosperity.

House Hypatia traces its roots back to the Holy Kingdom of Alinor, relocating to Vesper Ridge about a hundred years into the city’s history. For most of that time, the Hypatia family maintained good relations with the ruling House Vespridge, but it seems tension has mounted between the two houses during the reign of Lord Calix.

It seems that our very own Ophile Evenstar may have a connection to this family...

The building itself, known as Hypatia Manor, is a palatial Rococo-style estate deep within the opulent Velvet Ward, and well-staffed by a legion of servants all outfitted in accordance with Lord Calix’s rather eccentric fashion tastes.

title: Saint Octavia's Church

A small but opulent Guiding Way church located not far from the former Cathedral of Guiding Light in the central Tower Ward. Though diminutive in size, Saint Octavia’s is considered a deeply holy site due to the presence of its namesake’s remains interred within its underground crypt. According to some records, Saint Octavia may have dwelt here during her lifetime as well.

When the grand cathedral was (unconscionably) lost in the infamous deal with Iron Caseval, Saint Octavia’s Church was chosen as the new seat of The Keeper’s faith within Vesper Ridge. After the cathedral’s “fall” and the transfer of power, a dense row of trees was conspicuously planted along the edge of Saint Octavia’s churchyard that had until then provided a view of the cathedral across Forum Square.
In Chapter III of our story, Ophile consulted the church’s archives under strict supervision, researching the subject of Demons.
