title: Apostate Liturgist
---
A tall, vaguely humanoid creature with flesh of flowing liquid flame and a pair of great black wings framing its body. By means unknown, it appeared to burst forth from the body of a supplicant in response to the partys arrival.
As its appearance would suggest, the liturgist possesses some ability to wield and command fire as a weapon.

The popular nickname for a mysterious serial killer currently at large in Vesper Ridge. Their identity and motive are both unknown, but the pattern of their killings seems to target mages as well as individuals in positions of authority. So far, the constabulary has been completely foiled in its attempts to catch this killer. The citys newspapers, especially the popular Forum Square Gazette, report on the Bloody Butterflys rampage in lurid detail.

This description was recently corroborated for the party by one Mr. Cortis, an undertaker whose place of business the Butterfly recently ransacked in the process of conducting some sort of dark ritual. Apparently, the Bloody Butterfly seeks to “create worshipers” for itself.

An organization that serves as both the police and military of Vesper Ridge. It is divided into “interior” units that operate within the city and “exterior” units that patrol the Barrens and defend the city gates against more aggressive wildlife.
Most Vesperites believe the Black Light Mining Company must pay the Constabulary to turn a blind eye to their myriad illegal activities, though conflicts between the two organizations do still occur. Duchess Axelia Vespridge is the Constabularys highest commanding officer.
It appears that constable officers are currently carrying out an investigation in the west end of the city, in the wake of the customs offices destruction.

An undertaker, and sole proprietor of a small funeral home near the center of the Harbor Ward. He had a brush with death when the Bloody Butterfly broke into his home and drifted down to the morgue to perform some kind of sinister magic upon the corpses held therein. Luckily for Cortis, the Butterfly seemed to ignore his presence and left without raising a spectral hand against him.

---
A “church” managed by a young priestess named Sister Linia on the site of what was once known as Cairwick Orphanage. Linia, a priestess of the Black Rose, opens the buildings doors to the public each morning for services and breakfast. Despite the offer of free food, most Vesperites are hesitant to set foot in a church of the heretical goddess, and Rook keeps a close eye on any visitors who do appear. According to Linia, the Chapel of Second Chances is named after a similar church to the Black Rose that stood in Vesper Ridge hundreds of years ago.
A traditional “mourning blanket” for Poor Jimmy Ashcroft now hangs above the fireplace in the dining room.

The reigning deity over the Hallowed Lands. His faith is widespread throughout both Alinor and Lirios, as well as in Vesper Ridge between them. Though some other gods still retain scattered followings, there exists no organized religion on the continent aside from His. The Keeper is a god of justice, consequences, and “the natural order of things.” His followers pray to Him to right what they see as the wrongs of the world, to restore order in times of unrest, to restore their health in times of sickness, and to bring punishment to those who wrong them.
The Keepers faith is known as the Church of the Guiding Way, and Vesper Ridges central house of worship was, until recently, the Cathedral of Guiding Light in the Tower Ward.
The Keeper is often represented in art and architecture by the image of a radiant sun.

Because her doctrine preaches forgiveness and second chances, her faith is seen as heretical by the rigid Church of the Guiding Way. Followers of the Black Rose are commonly derided as cheaters, sinners, people who must be guilty of awful things to need the goddesss forgiveness. There is at least some truth to this narrative; convicts and the repentant are among her most devout followers.
Open worship of Our Lady of the Black Rose is illegal in Alinor, but not in Vesper Ridge. Even so, her following is highly taboo and public sites of worship are exceedingly rare within the city.
After Poor Jimmys death, our party learned of traditional funerary rites of the Black Roses faith from Sister Linia. When a member of the community passes away, their loved ones come together to knit a “mourning blanket” of black yarn embellished with intricate silver or white patterns, each one with a symbolic meaning known to the Black Roses devout and representative of the person being commemorated. These blankets are placed on display for an amount of time no shorter than the time the deceased spent among the community in life, and are then given to the family (or descendants of the family) of the deceased.

On his desk, the party found a letter addressed to Argrave by an individual known only as “H.” This letter, which strongly implied a threat to Argraves life, was likely the reason he sought to flee Vesper Ridge.

The name of a malformed sort of creature discovered by the party in the basement morgue below Cortiss funeral home. Though the supplicants exact nature is unknown, their jagged teeth and nails, burning hot breath, and mess of scar tissue in place of eyes or noses clearly mark them as something unnatural. According to Cortiss testimony, they were created by the Bloody Butterfly.
