Calix’s life before his adoption into House Hypatia is not public knowledge, and neither is the identity of his blood family. Some members of the [[aristocracy]] are keen on learning more about his past, seeking ammunition to discredit him and cast him out of [[Ainsley Vespridge|Duke Vespridge]]’s good graces, but their efforts are so far unsuccessful.
At some point before the start of our story, and for reasons unknown, Lord Hypatia wrote a letter summoning Ophile Evenstar to Vesper Ridge. Aside from their shared elven ancestry, any connection between the two is unknown.
He is very interested in getting to know Ophile better.

Despite her skill as a physician, she always looks a bit ill herself. Clammy, pale, with darting eyes and an uncanny manner of moving, she often scares away potential patients. Her appearance brings to mind the image of a weasel.
According to [[Rook]], Dr. Hawthorne commits a lot of petty crimes. He’s even heard rumors that she was once caught attempting a burglary.
